Getting Crafty With Office Paper
by aime maika - Sunday, 4 May 2008, 04:23 PM
Anyone in the world

By Gloria Diaz You know how much damage the making of new paper costs our environment. However, there is hardly any substance that can replace the function of paper. Even high-tech computers are not able to eliminate the need for paper. But there is one thing we can do to lessen our use of paper in our own way. You can segregate white office paper from other office trash for recycling. But with a bit creativity and effort, you can turn recycled paper supplies to a profitable business. Paper recycling is old news, but it seems to be an on-and-off venture for most people. Making recycled paper crafts into a business provides fuel to the recycling machine. If you look at bookstore displays, you'll find coarse looking stationery and specialty papers. Even if these look old and rough, they are more expensive than those smoother and printed papers. Those coarse specialty papers are handmade and use natural fibers and recycled paper. You don't need to buy a truckload of waste paper to get started. In fact, look around your house. Sort through your old files and see if there's anything in there that you don't need anymore. White office paper like bond papers are great for this recycling project. After sorting the white papers from the rest of your office supplies, shred them in a document shredder or just tear them to little pieces. Throw in colored paper if you like a bit of color and different textures. Place the shredded papers in a blender or food processor with hot water in batches. Blend for a couple of minutes until the mixture looks fine and in one color. Add food color or dye if desired. For a touch of ingenuity, a few drops of essential oils like lavender or rose water make for lightly scented papers. The blended pulp will be the base for your homemade paper. But to form and harden it, you must have a screen and mold. These materials are available in paper supplies stores or made at home using wooden frames and fiberglass screen. Meanwhile, soak the pulp in batches in a soaking solution made of water and liquid starch. The starch will prevent the ink from softening the paper. The amount of pulp per batch depends on the desired paper thickness. More pulp means thicker paper. Stir amd make sure that the starch is well incorporated in the pulp. Scoop the paper out using the molds and tap it to drain excess water. Level the surface of the pulp until smooth. Do this repeatedly until the right thickness and texture is achieved. Cover the mold with a fabric and invert it, making the pulp slide onto the cloth. Squeeze the pulp to remove excess water and dry it out. Stack the prepared pulp together with fabric in between in each layer. Press excess water out and separate the individual sheets. The sheets can be air-dried or laid out in newspapers to dry by sunlight. When dried, the handmade paper can be cut into desired sizes and bound by natural fibers like hemp rope to form a journal. When cut into tiny pieces, the sheets also make lovely note cards. To add a touch of elegance, dried flowers and leaves can be added during the molding process. The use of office paper is not limited to the office. With this project, you can start your own paper supplies business. A Beautiful Garden of Flowers
by aime maika - Friday, 2 May 2008, 06:22 AM
Anyone in the world

By Robert Roy You can make your garden of flowers the attraction of the neighborhood. As a gardener, knowing how to improve it can make the difference. The healthier your garden the better it will look. Usually a good looking garden will be a healthy garden. Here are simple ways to make your garden of flowers bloom more for your gardening heart's content: 1. The essentials must always be given major consideration. Just like with any gardening endeavor, a garden of flowers must have its adequate supply of water, light, and fertile soil. To lack one of these gardening necessities is almost preparing the death bed of your garden flower. Water the garden of flowers more frequently during dry spells. Also, make sure that you plant the flower bulbs deep enough to provide sufficient room for the rooting. 2. Mix and match perennials with annuals. Perennial flower bulbs need not to be replanted since they grow and bloom for several years while annuals grow and bloom for only one season. Mixing a few perennials with annuals ensures that the show goes on with your garden. 3. Deadhead to encourage more blossoms. Deadheading is simply snipping off the flower head after it wilts. This will make the plant grow more and produce more flowers. Just make sure that you don't discard the deadhead on the garden or mildew and other plant disease will attack your plants. 4. Know the good bugs from the bad bugs. Do you know that most garden insects do more good than harm? Butterflies, flies, beetles and bees are known as pollinators. They fertilize plants through unintentional transfer of pollen from one plant to another. And 80% of flowering plants rely on them for survival. Why do you think flowers are that colorful and pretty? Ill bet you thought it was to make humans more fond of them? It's actually to lure more insects. Sowbugs and dung beetles together with fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms make the soil friendlier to plants. This is because they subsist on dead materials, breaking them into simpler molecules that fertilize the soil. These bugs are known as the ever trusty decomposers. Now you don't just shoo away bugs whenever you see any. Choose your enemies. With loads of information in mind and practiced, your garden of flowers will surely thank you with a breath taking view when it's time for them to bloom again. Best Ab Workout - Secrets for Getting a Six Pack
by aime maika - Tuesday, 29 April 2008, 07:54 AM
Anyone in the world

By Tom Gifford Are you looking for the best ab workout to get a killer set of six pack abs? If so, you have come to the right place. You will learn some of the secrets which will help you achieve the best ab workout you've ever had. Seeing pictures of exercises are pointless unless you understand the mechanics involved with a great ab workout. Of course, it is a good idea for you to check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program because nothing is more important than your safety. Top 2 Tips for the Best Ab Workout 1. Don't work your abs like the other muscle groups. If you are going to try to get your biceps in better shape, you are likely to try doing bicep curls for 3 sets of 10, then hammer curls for 3 sets or 10, then band curls for 3 sets of 10, etc. While doing this, you are using moderately heavy weight and resting for at least 45 seconds between each set. If you are training your biceps, this type of workout is great. But, this may not be the best approach when working your abs. Physiologically, you abs are unlike any other muscle in the body. You will not get "big abs" by doing exercises that involve doing 3 heavy sets of 10 reps. Instead, it is better to work your abs using a circuit of different exercises that alternate between working your upper abs, lower abs, and obliques. So, don't go to the gym and do 3 sets of 1 ab exercise, then rest and do it all over again. If you practice circuit training with your abs in the right order, you will find your abs workouts are better than ever. 2. Nutrition is absolutely crucial. I seriously doubt that anyone tries to find the best ab workout around but doesn't care if they actually get a slim sexy waistline. In order to see your abs start to become defined, you need to have a low body fat percentage. Having a low body fat percentage is the corner stone for seeing the best results from an ab workout. You also need to understand how your body loses fat. This comes from raising your metabolism and and creating a caloric defecit in your diet. For example, if you cut back your daily calories by 500 per day, at the end of a 1 week you will have lose 1 lb. You can have the best ab workout in the world, but if diet is not conducive to losing body fat you will not notice any changes at all. So in conclusion, having a diet that is geared towards fat loss is the deciding factor in whether those abs will be slim and sexy or fat and flabby. Also remember, the best way to have a great ab workout is to do a sequential number of exercises that alternate between your upper abs, lower abs, and obliques. I could write down a bunch of ab exercises, but there is a 99% chance that you will not do them unless you see pictures. If you are serious about really working your abs, check out the links below. Teeth Whitening
by aime maika - Sunday, 27 April 2008, 06:07 AM
Anyone in the world

By P. Mehta Teeth whitening is a process of lightening the color of teeth. It involves a bleaching process that reduces the discoloration of the enamel and dentin caused due to smoking, aging, consumption of tea, coffee and colas. You can try tooth whitening if you have healthy teeth without any fillings. Teeth whiteners are not suitable for dark gray stains, crowns, colored fillings and stains due to some medication such as tetracycline. There are several types of products available for use at home. When selecting a whitener you must look for the ADA Seal for safety and effectiveness. Tooth whiteners gels or strips contain carbamide or hydrogen peroxide as the active bleaching ingredients. The bleaching gel is placed in a thin bleaching tray that fits over the teeth. The tooth whitening strips are placed on the teeth and gently pressed to make a contact between the whitener and the surface of the tooth. Results are usually seen within the first week. You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold or discomfort in the gums during treatment. These symptoms always disappear within a couple of days after completion of treatment. The tooth whitening toothpastes help remove surface stain through the action of mild abrasives or chemical polishing agents. Whitening toothpastes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance program do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth, unlike bleaches. You should never use lemon juice for teeth whitening because vitamin C will cause the teeth to lose calcium, damaging teeth quicker than anything else. P. One of the Key Secrets to Life-Long Leanness
by aime maika - Wednesday, 23 April 2008, 04:49 AM
Anyone in the world

By Mike Geary One of the things that I do on a regular basis to help me continually learn about fitness success and failure is observing people's habits and actions. I feel that these observations are equally as important as reading books, journals, articles, etc. for improving my knowledge of what works and what doesn't in fitness. Something that happens to me on a regular basis when I meet people is that once they find out that I'm a fitness professional, they start asking me questions about the things that they eat or how they exercise, and what my opinion is on it. I don't mind this, because it gives me some insight on exactly what people do, what they believe, and how things have worked for them. I will qualify that I only give my advice if it is asked for. I never preach about fitness to someone who didn't ask for my advice. After all, I know I don't want people preaching to me about their expertise if I didn't ask for the advice. So, one thing I noticed while on vacation last week in the carribean was that out of hundreds and hundreds of people from all different countries that were walking around the sunny resorts in bathing suits, I only saw a grand total of about 4 people that had anything resembling six-pack abs. That's only 4 people out of probably close to 1000 that I saw throughout the 7 days! This observation has nothing to do with their actions while on vacation, just about their current state of fitness. Now obviously most people, including myself, are not following their normal actions and behaviors on vacation that they would in normal life. That's not the point. I make observations about the habits and actions of both the fit people and the fat people on a daily basis to help determine successful vs. unsuccessful actions. It could be at grocery stores, at the gym, at restaurants, at the office, at someone's house...all are potential spots to learn why people are either fit or fat. Start paying attention to the actions of the people around you on a daily basis, and their corresponding body shape, and you'll learn a lot. Here are some examples of things you may notice: You might notice that the overweight woman at the office who claims she can never lose any weight is actually the first one in the kitchen whenever someone brings in free donuts or cookies. You might also notice that the guy with the beer gut, who says it's impossible for him to get rid of the gut, is skipping breakfast on a regular basis (a killer for your metabolism), and drinking 2 or 3 sodas a day without even realizing it. No wonder he's got a beer gut! On the other hand, you might also notice that the girl with the slim figure, who seemingly eats all kinds of junk food (and everyone gripes that she should be fat with all of that crap she eats), never actually finishes more than half of what she's eating. When you take a closer look, she's actually not eating that many calories day in and day out, and that's why she's lean. It's not always as it appears on the surface. The point is that there's always an underlying reason why someone is either fat or fit, and it revolves around their lifestyle, their actions, their habits. Look a little deeper and you'll learn a lot about why people fail and why people succeed with weight management and other fitness goals. Can You Don a Bikini and Hit the Beach Using the South Beach Diet?
by aime maika - Sunday, 20 April 2008, 07:14 AM
Anyone in the world

By Jason Ladock Diet books and fad diets are nothing new. It seems every few months there's a new weight loss program being touted by the so-called experts as the "new miracle diet". We, as consumers, are bombarded by before and after pictures and testimonials from people who have successfully lost weight with some fabulous new program. Two years ago, another new diet book hit the shelves. It was called "The South Beach Diet", written by Dr. Arthur Agatston. Since its release in 2003, The South Beach Diet has been listed on the New York Times' bestseller list for an impressive 103 weeks. Dr. Agatston has released companion books, started a fee-based website, and is working with Kraft Foods to create a line of pre-packaged South Beach menu items. How is this diet any different from the others, and more importantly, does it work? The main idea behind South Beach is to eat three meals a day along with snacks and even dessert, while avoiding highly processed foods. Dr. Agatston says that South Beach is not low carb or low fat, but rather good carb and good fat. The diet is broken down into three phases: phase one is very restrictive and lasts about two weeks, phase two is much more open with food choices and lasts until you reach your goal weight, and phase three is called 'maintenance', which should guide your food choices for the rest of your life. During phase one, you can eat until you are full (not stuffed full, just no longer hungry) from a list of approved foods. The list consists of mainly vegetables and lean meat, including seafood, as well as low fat or fat-free dairy products and legumes. You can have sugar-free Jell-o or popsicles as treats; up to 75 calories worth per day. Nuts and natural peanut butter are also on the list, but with limits. You're basically giving up bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, and sugar in all of its forms. The South Beach Diet book claims that you can lose 8-13 pounds in just two weeks on phase one, and that you will lose belly fat first. Phase two widens your menu quite a bit. You can now eat whole grain bread and pasta, brown rice, select fruits, and (my personal favourite) sugar-free Jell-o pudding. Still no sugar though, except for the occasional bite of dark chocolate. Good carbs in the form of whole grains and legumes, and good fats in the form of unsaturated, non-hydrogenated things like I Can't Believe it's Not Butter spray and olive oil are all approved. Once you've reached your goal weight, you're pretty much on your own. Phase three lets you eat within the phase two guidelines, adding occasional treats and 'white' food, but omitting the snacks you've come to depend on. There isn't much guidance here, since by now you should know what your body is able to handle. Dr. Agatston recommends that you return to phase two if you find yourself gaining weight again. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? The book even claims that you don't need to exercise to lose weight with this plan (although it does recommend that you add physical activity as part of your weight loss effort). While the eating plan is certainly healthy, there are some drawbacks to this diet - or at least with the way it is presented. Phase one is very restrictive. Sure, you're only on it for two weeks, and the potential weight loss is very encouraging. Many people, however, do not lose the 'guaranteed' 8-13 pounds in phase one and get discouraged. Not only that, but suddenly dropping all sugar and refined carbs from your diet can cause dizziness, light-headedness, an inability to focus or concentrate, and constipation (believe it or not). This rapid weight loss phase is designed to control your cravings, but sometimes the side effects just aren't worth it. If you think you can manage your cravings, head straight for phase two. South Beach also recommends that you use sugar substitutes, specifically Splenda. Some people have trouble digesting aspartame, while others prefer to avoid one unhealthy substance and substitute it with a chemically processed alternative. Explore your options in this case there are other ways to sweeten foods without sugar or chemicals. While you're on phase two, your weight loss should slow down to one or two pounds a week, according to the book. This is reasonable, and slow weight loss is definitely healthier than dropping pounds rapidly. It is a balanced diet and has great effects on your health, with the added benefit of losing unwanted pounds. What is confusing as far as the book is concerned though is that there are ingredients in the recipes that aren't found on the recommended "Foods to Enjoy" list. Also, Dr. Agatston asks that you add grains and fruit back to your diet slowly; only one serving a day to start, and gradually increase your servings until you find your weight loss slowing down. If you follow the daily menu plans in the book though, there are several fruit and grain servings for each day. For anyone who needs a structured plan based on numbers, The South Beach Diet is not the way to go. But if you like the freedom of not having to count anything and using common sense to lose weight, then South Beach is more of a strategic eating plan than a rigid diet and would work very well for you. Keep in mind that all diets revolve around the same principal: take in fewer calories than you burn off. Burn more calories than you consume, and the weight will come off. Eating well and enjoying healthy food is integral to this process, and that's where The South Beach Diet shines. Stethoscope Is A Medical Device
by aime maika - Monday, 14 April 2008, 09:26 PM
Anyone in the world

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jarl_Jacobsen] Jarl Jacobsen The stethoscope is a medical device to listen to internal sounds of the body. It is usually used to listen to the sounds of the heart or breathing and can also be used to listen to the intestines and blood flow. It was invented by Rene-Theophile-Hyacinthe Laennec in 1816. It was first just a wooden tube. In 1851 Arthur Leared invented the binaural stethoscope and that has become the standard model ever since then. Several years there the a model that was developed to connect to different locations of the body to create a stereo effect, but it didnt see as much use in the medical world then the one that Leared invented. Since the 1960s stethoscopes have taken some turns and have been refined. The acoustical performances of stethoscopes have been constantly improved over the past couple of decades. However, it was not until Dr. David Littmann invented his stethoscope that there were major changes. After his invention, many doctors began to carry around different stethoscopes than the nurses. The nurses would carry around one type, while the doctors carried the two-sided chest piece stethoscope. This becomes the stethoscope of choice in America and it is still the basis for most stethoscopes used in the medical world today. Today, the stethoscope is used to help with diagnosing many diseases and conditions. Usually, the first thing that a doctor will do is taking your blood pressure and use the stethoscope to listen. They will also ask you to take deep breaths in order to tell if anything is blocking your lungs. The stethoscope is able to transmit the sounds and exclude others. Stethoscopes are a symbol of the medial world and usually doctors or nurses are seen carrying them around their necks. One way that they are used outside the medical world is by mechanics. Stethoscopes are used to isolate sounds of particular engine parts for their own diagnosis.
There are two different types of stethoscopes. One type is the acoustic stethoscope. This is to diagnose people and operates by transmission of the sound from the chest piece to the hollow tubes and to the persons ears. The chest piece usually has two sides, one a plastic disc and the other a hollow cup. A diaphragm is places on the patient to listen to the sounds or vibrates of the body. The bell or hollow cup is placed on the patient to listen to the vibrations of the skin directly sends pressure waves to the doctors ears. The bell transmits low sounds, while the diaphragm is to transmit sounds with higher sound wave frequencies. The electronic stethoscope requires the conversion of acoustic sound waves to an electrical signal. They are based on transducers and vary widely. This is not a popular type of stethoscope, but has found to be useful in certain situations. The author J. L. Jacobsen is a freelance writher, and writhe articles of difference stuff. Managing Heartburn Without Surgery
by aime maika - Friday, 11 April 2008, 11:00 AM
Anyone in the world

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jessica_Deets] Jessica Deets Acid Reflux Disease (GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease or GERD) occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. Oftentimes a burning sensation is felt in the chest and this has been commonly referred to as heartburn. If you have chronic heartburn, it is highly recommended to see a doctor. According to a study mandated by a new Medicare law, data has come back saying that drugs can be just as effective as even surgery in managing some of the symptoms of acid reflux. This can affect many people, as it is estimated that currently sixty million Americans have acid reflux. If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease, knowing that in some cases drugs may be as effective as surgery, it makes available a variety of treatment options. Your doctor may recommend an over the counter medication, such as an antacid or a prokinetic agent. If this is not effective, prescription antacids may be recommended or even surgery, or a combination of both. It's been found that with chronic GERD, over-the-counter medications (such as Zantac, Pepcid and Tagamet -- each with their own respected trademarks) are not as effective as proton pump inhibitors. But the proton pump inhibitors can have more side effects. Also, the respected brands Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec OTC are all similar in the degree of effectiveness. And when compared to surgery, they seem to compare similarly in relieving the discomfort of GERD. One thing to keep in mind is that even though there are antacids and surgery to help manage your symptoms, be sure not to overlook a simple cure.
Sometimes just because a cure is simple, people scoff at the ability of it to help. It's best to start with the easiest and cheapest solutions (such as reducing workplace stress) and then work your way to something more dramatic (like surgery). Some people have found a simple way to control heartburn is by just making simple lifestyle changes. The most obvious lifestyle change that you could make to help manage your heartburn symptoms is also the simplest of all solutions: avoid any food or drinks that make you feel uncomfortable. Some people say this is too easy and it can't work, some people say it's too difficult to make dietary adjustments. But you can try a simple experiment to see if this provides your cure. Take four week test and replace any fatty, deep-fried foods with healthier alternatives, such as a salad, vegetables, and non-citrus fruits. In addition, try to avoid any caffeine drinks (this is probably the most difficult of all) and instead try non-caffeinated drinks and herbal teas. Another diet tip is to eat a just barely ripened banana (were there is still a small bit of green left to it) about a half hour before bed. I know, it sounds crazy, but some people swear by this simple and healthy method of controlling heartburn. You may not have realized it, but stress could be a contributing cause to your acid reflux. Studies have found that the body makes more stomach acid in stressful situations, and if you find yourself "stressing out," then it's time to learn to relax. There's lots of resources on the internet with instructions on reducing stress: the main thing is to find a relaxing place all to yourself, or listen to calm music, or read by yourself. Make sure you don't let other people make their problems become your problem. If everyone asks you how to solve their problems, then get out of the problem solving business. Once you discover the source of your stress, find ways to reduce your exposure to this stressor and you may find your acid reflux to be a thing of the past. If you have acid reflux, the best thing to do is to seek help from your medical professional. You can get trusted advice and then make your own choice. And for some people, the acid reflux may be so severe that they'll need to have surgery and then follow up with medications to really get a handle on it. However, some simple changes in your life may provide all the help you need and may even enhance your quality of living. Copyright (c) 2006. The Local Taste of Scottish Strawberries
by aime maika - Wednesday, 9 April 2008, 06:25 AM
Anyone in the world

By Aurel Voiculesco The first locally grown Scottish strawberries of the season have finally arrived and are being snapped up by local supermarkets. Strawberries are always a sure sign of summer's arrival and these ones are extra special because they are grown locally and delivered directly to local Dundee ASDA stores by the grower himself to ensure ultimate quality & freshness. These first strawberries were grown in Arbroath in Angus on a newly established Strawberry Farm by Andrew Cranston. The farm operation in Arbroath has been setup in February by Well Pict European-Scotland to cover the existing gap in the demand for high quality locally grown berries in Scotland. Andrew, who is originally from the boarders, is a 4th generation strawberry grower. After spending the last few years growing strawberries in Kent, he has returned to Scotland to do what he does best. He is confident that he is now producing amongst the freshest & tastiest strawberries in Scotland. Scottish customers have long realised that Scottish strawberries are very different to the imported alternatives and after a long winter of eating Spanish imports, a return to the famously sweet and delicate Scottish berry is truly a pleasure. The Scots are very particular about their berries and are very supportive of the home grown crop. Sales of strawberries in Scotland more than double during the Scottish growing season, which is a clear sign of the huge demand for locally grown & produced berries. The National Farmers Union Scotland has recently been asking supermarkets to increase the amount of local produce that they buy from local suppliers and reduce the amount of food miles incurred. They continue to say that many foods are already produced in Scotland to a very high standard and it makes no sense to ship in equivalents from around the world. The UK has become a nation overly reliant on imported food and Scottish suppliers are facing major financial pressure as a consequence of cheep imports. Andrew harvests his strawberries every day and delivers to his local stores six times a week as part of ASDA's Local Choice campaign. This way local berries are sold in local stores and consumed by local people. He commented "Customers really want to support their local farms and growers, as they know that their money is going to remain in the local economy." Asda have actively encouraged local growers and farmers to deliver their produce directly to their local store instead of supplying via the regional depot. This ensures that berries have an extra day of shelf life as the depot day' is removed. This means that the product is fresher, tastier and lasts longer. It is especially important with a product as delicate as a Scottish strawberry, which are possibly the most delicate of all strawberries, to do all that is possible to extend shelf life. Furthermore, delivering locally ensures that food travels far fewer food' miles, which benefits the environment by reducing harmful emissions from fleet transportation. Scotland is one of seven regions around Britain where locally grown strawberries are received by 80 local stores. Richard Hatherley, ASDA's fruit buyer says of the campaign, "The concept of Local' is really impacting upon customers buying behaviour and we are noticing an ever increasing demand for locally grown produce. It is a fantastic development that actively encourages Scottish growers even further to grow local foods for local consumption". ASDA are very supportive of this initiative and are determined to develop and grow local wherever possible. AMS Marketing will be supplying Twenty Two ASDA stores in Scotland with local Strawberries this season. The season starts in mid June and continues to October. The Scottish Strawberry industry is now worth many millions of pounds, which gives a tremendous boost for the local rural economies, many of which still depend on agriculture.
